The Central Museum of Mongolian Dinosaurs has an exhibition of dinosaur skeletons and fossils. The museum was during our visit (they plan to expand in the coming years) in 2016 consisting of just a single open room but that room instantly shows you what you came here for; the skeleton of a 3-meter Tyrannosaurus Baatar, of the Tyrannosaurus Rex family.
This skeleton made the international press in 2012 when it was sold for over $ 1 million at an auction at Texas, USA, after which the Mongolian government announced that the skeleton was illegally smuggled out of the country a few decades ago. A US judge agreed with the Mongols, and as a result you can see it in this little museum for just 3000 Tugrik per person (approximately € 1.50). Besides the famous skeleton there are several other skeletons, dinosaur eggs and fossils to admire.
Making a tour to the Gobi Desert during your stay in Mongolia? Then a visit to this small museum is worth adding. The Gobi Desert, especially the Flaming Cliffs (LINK), is actually the site of many fossils and skeletons.
Location: Located on Freedom Square in the centre of Ulaanbaatar.
