The Gandan Khiid Monastery in Ulaanbaatar is one of the most important Buddhist centres in Mongolia. In the early 19th century, the complex had of over a 100 temples and monasteries, but after the religious cleansing in 1937 only some of these buildings remained standing. Only around 1990 the Mongols again openly practiced Buddhism and today, over 600 monks joined the monastery in the capital.
Around 9:00 am the prayers and ceremonies at the monastery start, which is the best time to plan your visit. Walking around the grounds and attend the activities is free. However, if you want to exhibit the 26-meter high statue of Avalokiteshvara in the main temple, then you pay approximately 4000 Tugrik (€ 2, -) entrance fee plus any additional costs if you want to take pictures.
Location: The Monastery is situated on the edge of the centre, on Öndör Gegeen Zanabazaryn Gudamj. A 20-minute walk from the Genghis Khan Square.
