Little Eden hotel

Little Eden Hotel Don Det

On the most northern tip of Don Det, the most popular island of Laos’ 4000 Islands, you can find Little Eden hotel. A charming accommodation with a European ambiance and a perfect location right on the banks of the Mekong River. The accompanying Little Eden restaurant is one of the most beautiful locations on the island to watch the sunset.

Belgian roots

The hotel is owned by the West Flemish Mathieu, who came to Don Det 14 years ago as a backpacker. At that time, there was no power on the island and there were hardly any hotels. Mathieu got hooked on Don Det and decided to build his own hotel two years later. The first edition of Little Eden consisted of bamboo huts with roofs of leaves.
Mathieu: “In the afternoon, we thought about what the evening meal was going to be and I walked past all the cabins to ask who wanted to join in for dinner. Then for example we bought two chickens, which we had to slaughter and prepare, so that all the guests were eating chicken and rice in the evening. “

Times have changed. Over the years, the bamboo huts have given way to a hotel designed by the Belgian himself, the most luxurious one that can be found on Don Det. Opposite the main building, which has the best rooms, there is an annex with somewhat simpler, budget-friendly bungalows. “This way we have options for everyone”, Mathieu says, “most of my guests are flashpackers, but more and more often adventurous families make their way to the island as well.” That Little Eden is in a league on it’s own also shows by the visits of famous guests; the crew of ‘3 Op Reis’ (a Dutch tv show about travel), the BCC and other travel programs all stayed at this hotel.

Sunset on the Mekong

On the waterfront you will find the Little Eden restaurant, serving Western and Asian dishes for a local price which is in line with other restaurants on the island. Even if you are not going there for dinner, at least drink a local beer at the end of the afternoon and enjoy the beautiful sunset on the Mekong River. Non-hotel guests can also visit the restaurant.

The same applies to the nice swimming pool that lies just in front of the hotel. Here you can also find a bar, terrace and sun beds. Swimming and relaxing is free for hotel guests, other people can use the swimming pool at a charge.
